Yes, this means you get to experience the fun of choosing which cards to put in which slots. Suppose you want a Mockingboard in slot 1 and a Disk II in slot 6, you would invoke MAME as so: ./mame64 apple2e -sl1 mockingboard -sl6 diskii
Also, bear in mind that since slot devices are just representations of physical cards, they can and do sometimes add slots of their own. To see what slots are available with your chosen configuration, just tack -listslots on to the end.

For example, suppose you stuck a parallel card in slot 7 using -sl7 parallel, the system now has an available Centronics port, to which you can attach things like emulated printers, via -sl7:parallel:pic_ctx [option].
