It annoys me so much that the only way I could play castle crashers with my 4yo son (a game he likes and can actually play) is by getting a second Xbox live account 
I hate to be 'that guy', but are you aware that Castle Crashers is also available on Steam, and last I checked, Steam doesn't require a monthly fee?

Is it local multiplayer? The idea being that I use some Xbox wired controllers perhaps?

You're describing the crazy fun-fests that I had with my friends Marcus and his sister Rowan circa 2012, and I'm pretty sure the Steam version hasn't regressed since then!
