It should be easy to know when you’ve found the official YouTube channel of a creator, artist, brand, or public figure. So in late October, we’re updating what it means for channels to be “Verified” w/ new eligibility criteria & a new look. Details → https://yt.be/help/3QfB pic.twitter.com/JXOvMbkbns
You say that content creators will no longer need to apply, but it feels more like "NOTABLE content creators will no longer need to apply." Meanwhile everyone else will have to e-mail in to ask "hey uhhh I have people impersonating me, can you please verify my account?"

And it's basically already happening. Already you're here telling people left and right to appeal the revoking of their verification, as if that's the new "application." If you're going to be making that basically required to get verified, why not just have an application system?

You say that the old system was for when YouTube was smaller, but I somehow find it unlikely that a system that says "yeah just wait around until someone on the team finds and verifies you" is better for a larger site than "apply for verification yourself."
