If people are preoccupied with being white I run in the opposite direction. This might very well foster white id politics. All of it's harmful.

Yes, all of it’s harmful, but only when racial identitarianism is practiced by white people is it called out. That’s what I’m commenting on. I have black nationalists in my comments every day, and not only does the left not condemn them, they foster them.
-
1. Black nationalism is not the same as white nationalism. Black nationalism is based on the empowerment of black people. 2. White nationalism is predicated on white supremacism and an ideological dedication to the oppression of nonwhite people.
-
How do we know both aren’t evidence for the idea that there are people of all races who feel a motivation to preserve their community’s culture? People within a race differ in their degree of this motivation. The ones with the strongest strain of this motive become nationalists.
-
How can we ask any ethnic community to not care about any societal changes that may change the culture that their community lives in?
-
None of this excuses those who care too much or seek solutions that are immoral or dangerous to other ethnic communities. I agree that anytime any nationalist seeks to harm or steal from those outside their community, that is wrong. But yes, we need to define “stealing”.
-
A lesser sin than harm or theft is spreading false info about an outside group. But still one worth fighting against, with knowledge and information freely exchanged.

I think people should celebrate culture, not race. Race is a dumb thing to celebrate. "Congratulations, you've been born!!"
-
I’d agree with that, but I think nowadays race is often conflated with culture, and vice versa
-
I think it's natural for culture to have evolved in some aspects along racial lines, yes, but they should be distinct, as solutions are found by changing culture, not race.

It's probably because Black pride has historically been a response to years of white racism while white pride has historically been a way to promote white supremacy. White racial identitarianism, or whatever term you use to describe it, *is* white supremacy.
-
I hate it when people bring up these arguments as if everything exists in vacuum and completely isolated from historical context. White people colonized the world and educated the world in anti-blackness in order to justify/maintain the oppressive systems they created.
-
“White pride” is pride in having created that... is that something to be proud of????

Hi, hello, I am Irish - born and raised in Ireland, ethnically a settled Irish person. I'm white is what I'm saying. So let me explain why "white racial identity" is different.
-
For a very, very, VERY long time, there was no such thing as "white people". I'm Irish. My ancestors closest neighbours were over in Britain. They did not see each other as part of the same group - AT ALL. In fact, Irish people weren't considered white until fairly recently.
-
Even in the US, there was discrimination against Irish people - and it was significantly less than the discrimination faced by other groups. That discrimination was because we - Irish people - were deemed less civilized, inherently inferior, violent, lazy.
-
There were deemed as such by what were then considered white folks - people of Germanic or French descent usually - certainly not Irish or Italian or several other European ethnic groups.
-
Because, ya see, THAT is the heritage of whiteness - a heritage of oppression, supremacy, imperialism and colonialism. Irish people have been integrated with that institution now. We benefit from white privilege. You'll even see the odd Irish identitarian running around paroting
-
the same language about whiteness and the threats it's supposedly facing that we're used to justify horrific violence against their own ancestors. The words that were said while their ancestors starved and food exports were increased. The words that were said when their ancestors
-
we're faced with fleeing to bogs and swamps or dying by the hand of "more civilised settlers".
-
So I'm white. I'm proud of my Irish heritage. I correct my American friends every time they say "St. Patty's Day". I'll talk your ear off about the Celtic origins of what we now call Halloween. I will judge a bar by its Guinness quality even though I don't drink.
