Authors suggest that these drug regimens should not be used to treat #COVID19 outside of clinical trials and urgent confirmation from randomised clinical trials is needed (3/4)
“The findings...add to preliminary reports suggesting that regimens of chloroquine or #hydroxychloroquine, alone or with azithromycin, are not useful & could be harmful in hospitalised patients with #COVID19” - Comment from C Funck-Brentano & J Salem https://hubs.ly/H0qMj2j0 (4/4)pic.twitter.com/JNiCs9ASRg
Here we go again: another #covid19 drug effectiveness observational study using a no user control group. Journal editors really need to involve #pharmacoepidemiology experts in the review of these papers... I am reading 3-4 of these per week @ISPE_Exchange
Can you explain the problem with this study in lay person terms?
Why are RCTs needed? Yes better but why waste the money on something with so little promise.
Because obviously real doctors and scientists see benefits from it. In fact, more trials are starting now. Retrospective study of sickest patients are meaningless. Spain is starting one on pregnant women. Morocco and UK just ordered MORE hydroxychloroquine.
Who is studying patients who test positive but have not been hospitalized? If the value of the drug is in slowing viral replication and reducing inflammatory response, hasn’t that ship sailed by the time patients are hospitalized?
UW is - Research volunteers needed: If you were in contact with a person, family member, or friend diagnosed with #COVID19, you may qualify for a paid study. No travel needed. Find out more: http://covid19pepstudy.org #Covid19PepStudy
