I maxed out at $75k as an accountant. W/ no degree I felt lucky? But I had worked at that company putting in overtime for 7 yrs straight. Brought my son to work instead of PTO. Relocated. Waited for free health insurance only for the benefit to be taken away when I got my 5 yrs.

Stuck it out through several years of salary/bonus freezes. Put up with ALL of the micro-aggressions. Was working so much I didn’t even have the freedom to use my healthcare for therapy. My mental health suffered SO badly during that time.

And when I got fired it was done so callously that I realized immediately how much energy I’d wasted on this company that didn’t care about me. After 7 years left with barely enough severance to get by the next few months. Never again.

I remember literally sitting in my car on lunch breaks so I could cry. Crying on the way home. Crying on the way to work. The tension I felt as soon as I sat at my desk, and then spacing out for hours. None of that is normal and if you feel that way please pay attention to it!

Especially if you deal w/ a lifelong mental illness (like bipolar depression.) The corporate environment was just never going to be healthy for me, ever. I was tired of fighting it. Not saying it’s easy to explore new career paths, but please believe me you CAN put yourself 1st.

I’m so happy you are sharing this truth. So many are suffering and have been made to feel that it’s the only option.

I was so so so angry all the time when I worked in an "office". I thought there was something wrong with me. It is only when I started working as a freelancer did I realise there is something wrong with forcing people to sit in cubicles for 60 hours a week.

The crying in the parking lot is a red flag and yet I stayed thinking I needed to rough it out. I’d only been there for 7months. 😕Bad move, bad decision but quitting never felt so good. I had squirreled money away. That job zapped my mental and emotional hard❤️❤️

I’m an accountant & feel same. I literally have anxiety about work, the meetings (I’m overlooked), the back-biting, the performance reviews, all while knowing these employers DGAF about me. I checked out mentally long ago. I’m $12 thousand from goal of $60 to start a new life.

Lol the part that would enrage me was feeling obligated to work overtime to make sure those numbers were right. All of that stress so rich white men could get bonuses and earn hundreds of thousands more than I ever had a chance to make. I hope you meet your goal soon! ❤️
