Wild thought that has occurred to me: I know other artists make "warm up" pieces before they start on their main project but I realized, I typically have so little time to draw that I jump in right away to the big one

I would often do something like that when I was painting minis for games. Start a session with a less important piece and then move onto the ones I cared about more.
I definitely need to get into the habit of doing this, if only to get more practice under my belt

Yeah, I got decent at painting minis but was never good at it. I’m sure more practice would have helped, but I also never really enjoyed it, was more so I could have an army on the table that wasn’t bare metal to play with.

But if it is something you enjoy and want to get better at, then yeah, warm up sketches seem like a good idea.
