Wild thought that has occurred to me: I know other artists make "warm up" pieces before they start on their main project but I realized, I typically have so little time to draw that I jump in right away to the big one
It's frustrating too, because I sometimes tell myself that I can't pick up another art project until I finish my other one first, so then I just make no art at all because I'm burned out on 'the big one'

Yep. I'm not even sure HOW I would do a warm-up, since I don't do sketches. Diving in is the only way.

Hmm, maybe practicing specific features on the subject you want to paint?
