This is exactly what I do.

It's frustrating too, because I sometimes tell myself that I can't pick up another art project until I finish my other one first, so then I just make no art at all because I'm burned out on 'the big one'

Somedays i just make time for a warm up even if I don't have much time. Other days I feel ready to dive in. It's def hard if you only have a cpl hours though and just want to get down to work.

That makes sense, yeah. And I'm also really guilty of sometimes, when I have the couple of free hours, I'll choose to play video games or do something else because I want something more mindless than an intense art project (when art, in reality, doesn't always need to be intense)

I would often do something like that when I was painting minis for games. Start a session with a less important piece and then move onto the ones I cared about more.

I definitely need to get into the habit of doing this, if only to get more practice under my belt

All my arts are sketches so I guess I have been in "warm up" mode for the last 20 years xD
