/ Datasets where the same neuron is recorded from with probes and patch-clamp enable theoretical neuroscientists to benchmark their algorithms and find new ways to improve them. There are many out there and some great examples are #KiloSort #SpyKINGcircus #MountainSort

/ Paired recording datasets also tell us a lot of basic important info about extracellular recordings: How far can you detect activity from? How different do spikes from the same neuron look? Do you pick up spikes from dendrites and axons? Do they look different?

/ Paired recording datasets are also really fun to analyse and can be used for many other questions, such as the ones we propose to collaborate on in the repo:http://bit.ly/paired_git

/ This is a summary of our dataset. We recorded at distances of 10-140µm from the probe, mainly in L5, and got both pyramidal cells and (putative) interneurons. But look at those grey circles in plot A...pic.twitter.com/24zHFuRH9z

/ Intriguingly, some neurons were close to the probe but produced weak extracellular fields. Our distances are estimates, but we’re confident there are ~7 “dark neurons” in our dataset. These are cells that for unknown reasons are hard to detect in extracellular recordings.

/ Check out this excellent review on potential "dark neurons" by Shoham, O'Connor & Regev (2006):https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00359-006-0117-6 …

/ Focusing on the neurons we *do* "see", one of the exploratory analyses we do is to look at how much the features of the extracellular action potential waveform change, for the same neuron. Not a lot, it turns out: most features have a coefficient of variation of 10-20%.pic.twitter.com/R0yNjfm2QY

/ We’re going to follow up this work with more analyses and perhaps more and new experiments. In the spirit of #openscience we want to involve you in it. Have a look at the repo to see howhttp://bit.ly/paired_git

/ You can use the #GitHub repo to suggest new experiments, propose new analyses and even contribute them yourself, or comment on other people's suggestions. #neuroscience is hard. We need your help to make sense of all this.

/ These experiments took the combined efforts of at least 10 people. Each person you see on the author list contributed decisively and I'm grateful to every one of them. @glopesdev @taunbot @KampffLab @Phillips_M_G (the others are not on twitter!)

/ The work was funded by the @wellcometrust. We forgot to acknowledge this in the preprint (I’m so embarrassed), but will update it in a revised version. It was conducted at @SWC_Neuro , which is turning into a very exciting place to be for #neuroscience!

/ The #openscience thinking behind it was greatly influenced by discussions with @AndrewGYork @Chagas_AM @glopesdev @nbonacchi @taunbot @Neurosarda and an event with @npscience and @eLifeInnovation as well as previous pubs by @j_colomb @computingnature @marius10p

/ The more "ground-truth" datasets out there, the better for extracel ephys. Check out the Buzsáki lab classic http://bit.ly/2JQA3xO , our lab's http://bit.ly/2LlVQTB  and the recent http://bit.ly/2NHiZMW  by @eboyden3 using a patching robot! There are others in our refs.

/ That’s all for now. I joined the @KampffLab in April 2017 to start this project and am so grateful for the faith and mentorship I’ve received here. Only been a year but it’s been a great ride. For now I need a holiday, but I’m looking forwards to the next experiments already!
