Because if you don't define representation in children's media, children are implicitly taught the normative social model excludes LGBT people. Sesame Street has long used human and muppet characters to visibly show children they and other humans aren't aberrations.

Sesame Street has explicitly taught against racism, explained grief to children, there's been muppet characters with HIV or autism. Fostering the next generation includes gender and sexuality diversity, which doesnt mean anything naughty. It means kids with gay parents see it.
