@TheFoodLab same here; i think of home fries as chunked potatoes, hash as diced potatoes, hash browns as shredded potatoes

@TheFoodLab I use your trick for crispy edges on potatoes (boiling in water with a splash of vinegar) all the time. Never fails.

@TheFoodLab I don't eat either, but cut always seems like the big difference. Home fries also seem more likely to have herbs added.

@TheFoodLab home fries are more of a uneven chop. Chunky. Hashbrowns are uniform, matchstick like.

@TheFoodLab around here, hash browns are large-grated and expected to cohere on a flat layer, brown and crisp on both sides.
