The University of North Texas () student government passed a resolution to immediately suspend any student org that violates “UNT policy through transphobic posts.”
That is blatant viewpoint discrimination and flatly unconstitutional.

2/ UNT is a public institution bound by the 1A. But apart from that, viewpoint discrimination risks chilling the speech of student groups, especially political student groups, who may face repercussions for speech that could be construed as transphobic

3/ To be clear, if a student’s conduct targeting an LGBTQ student met the threshold for discriminatory harassment as identified by the SCOTUS, it would lawfully be subject to discipline.

4/ The solution for UNT and all other institutes of higher learning is for student government associations to adopt explicitly VIEWPOINT-NEUTRAL criteria for evaluating and funding new student groups.
