Wow. We should crowdfund a basketball scholarship in her name.

He made a beautiful lake in her name, open to the public, and a wildlife refuge in his son’s name, who also passed. He’s pretty amazing.

I live 10 miles from this man and have known him my whole life. You really don't know the journey he has had. He gives all of us hope down here. Love him bunches!!! Thanks for having him on your show.
-
When you see him tell him how much I respect him for his courage to do what he did. What an inspiration he is.
-
It takes courage and guts. Congratulations sir for standing up to people who have differing views. Your daughter would be proud.
-
I dont think standing up to people with different views than your own is an accomplishment, how about coming to some sort of understanding due to it instead?
-
There is no coming to an understanding on this one. Hate is hate. I applaud the father for standing up for what is right.

The video of him on election night made me cry. I'm so glad you had him on. He reminded me of my own journey with my parents.
-

Now this man is a REAL CHRISTIAN! He knows what Jesus taught. "He who is without sin, cast the first stone." Thank you for your courage and love sir!
-
What’s sad is that the church especially in the 1950s- 1990 taught you that being gay is a sin. I’m glad the church and the world is changing. God bless that man.

I love this man! He lives not too far from me. What a sad, yet touching story that shows people CAN change and change lives for the better. I have no doubt in my mind that he helped Doug get elected. Love you Mr. Mathis!

They can. But like this man, they have to come to the realization themselves. They can't be told, scolded, bullied or beaten into a belief. They have to come to it on their own terms. Sadly, so few do which makes his epiphany so profound and touching. I wish him peace.
