Is it that you guys hate Africa that much? Calling them French does not erase the past. I'm sure you call the ones who commit crimes "African immigrants"
It's not about hating africa. It's about integration. Naming a citizen by his origins is considered as racist because it would mean that the person has failed to integrate into the society. Now we talk a lot about africa because the overwhelming majority are from there^^
I understand, but I think it's hypocritical to fully embrace these ones as French yet the ones who commit crimes and stuff are referred to as African immigrants. That tag only comes up when there's a negative thing
Referred to by who? I think you guess wrongly that french press does as US does.
Gerard Araud: “Unlike in the USA, France does not refer to its citizens based on their race, religion or origin” also Araud (to french student union leader): “your hijab is regressive”pic.twitter.com/Xljkb0WA7b
In which way is that incoherent? Precisely because in France the separation of state and religion is highly regarded, these kind of religious displays are not well seen. They go against the idea of not referring to citizens by their religion..
no they go against a citizen’s right to be considered French regardless of their religious background. It is up to the person “referring to” the other who is responsible for, well, how they refer to that person. You’ve got the active end of the verb the wrong way round.
Also, this woman is a private citizen. Nothing to do with separation of state and religion.
Identity is a very sensitive issue in France. What Anglo-saxons, and especially americans cannot understand is that french model of immigration is not communitarianist. On the contrary everything is done to prevent communitarianism. So no they cannot be both french & sth else.
In France communitarianism is considered as a failure of integration into the society. Saying to a french black guy that he is african is a racist insult. And all far-right people said that indeed africa won to highlight the lack of "frenchness" of the team.
I really like Trevor but disagree with him on this one. I think it's problematic how Americans try to impose their highly raciallized views on identity, heritage and culture on other parts of the world where the discourse has historically been quite different.
He is not an American citizen, he is an african guy who celebrated his african origin french players.... Are these players detached from their african origin/roots? Are they no longer allowed to identify themselves as Africans?
Did you ever ask yourself if Mickael Jordan was African? No. Period.
He was AFRICAN-american.. Not hard to grasp if you just use a cell or two from your brain buddy!
Exactly. Because you only have this concept in your little brain. Nowhere in the world we say african british, african croatian, african french, african mexican... do you get it? They are french, british, mecixan... ah, finally, now you get it. It just took you 2 hours
Come On man.. you can't be this stupid... You never heard of African-American? Not even once?
