Biophysical models of cis-regulation can be expressed as interpretable neural networks, where nodes and weights have meaningful physiochemical interpretations! Very cool work by and ! Read more at:

The nice thing about generating images is that we can look at the results and intuitively know if they're good. That's much harder to do with say, a protein sequence.

Very interesting work on the overlooked "collateral fitness effects of mutations" by the Ostermeier lab at Johns Hopkins, who gave us a nice preview 2018.

1/ Nextstrain is already famous for its interactive and intuitive visuals - and now they're even better! We've been hard at work on a major upgrade to our amazing visualization tool, Auspice - and now we're pleased to announce its arrival!

One part that I really like about this paper is that it showcases how one can get information about the key evolutionary forces based on the measurement of many other forces and not just that of random genetic drift. 4/n

Our new paper was to be called “Staying on top of a wave in a fitness seascape”, but PNAS thought it was cheesy, so we’ve settled with a more boring title. A still more appropriate one, though, would’ve been “The rear view of the Red Queen” 1/4

Important thread from my colleague ! The bottom line is that you don't really know a drug's mechanism of action until you see resistance mutations, and many drugs in clinical trials appear to work via mechanisms that do not include the putative target.
