So what about laptops? I'd argue that "needs" both as its usually very visible to others (coworking spaces, cafés, uni, etc...)

Yep, I always wonder what cars people would drive if somehow no other person could see them. Buying a car would probably be like buying household appliances- you buy something cost effective that does the job and nothing else.
-
F1 cars = built 100% for speed Tanks = built 100% for war Examples of how cars look when looks don't matter to the user.
-
The built 100% for utility and cost effectiveness vehicle? Honda Jazz maybe? Definitely a market for devices that make your car look like a more expensive car

Also because Moore's Law isn't really working anymore, which likely played its part in the development of the smartphone to begin with; meaning the selling of faster, better specs ceased to be the model.
-
Faster / better specs is still the main selling points for desktop computers. Just look at the ads for them - it's all specs focused.
-
Fair enough. I don't own one. Didn't think speeds were moving as quick as in past, & chip cos had switched to efficiency for gains? *Qualification Faster, fatter specs ceased to be the model of the primary computing unit-shifter. Now it's gimmicks, and phone sales are dropping

An insight i got from 'the four', explaining the sexiness of iphonehttps://www.amazon.com/Four-Hidden-Amazon-Facebook-Google/dp/0525501223 …
-
How was this book? Seems interesting, is it worth a read?
-
I liked the book, especially the parts on apple. I am not a tech guy so his references across many industries piqued my interest. For ex. He says apple is a company with ferrari's margin and toyota's sales volume' or 'the most succesful media co after fb and goog is bloomberg'
-
These may seem obvious but explaining tech companies in that context made me understand them better.
-
Would rec this (quick read) for a deeper look at phenomena (less tech focus) https://www.amazon.com/dp/0691162735/
-
It looks interesting. Thank you.

True more about iPhones than Android powered phones. The latter ones have always packed more "hardware power" while Apple always sold for brand name and bling-bling...

That's interesting because specs are far more important than sexiness.

Partially true and not every one understand specs as computers become ubiquitous. It has to do with convenience.
