#SR15 by @IPCC_CH https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/ shows we need to achieve net-negative emissions *economy wide* within decades to meet climate goals. Leading organizations & governments will need to achieve this by 2030, just like Microsoft has laid out.
Carbon removal commitments among companies are something of a trend nowadays. @InterfaceInc has committed to net-negative carbon emissions by 2040 and @Stripe has committed to buy $1M in negative emissions offsets.https://twitter.com/TheCarbonSink/status/1162180843265118208?s=20 …
Microsoft takes it one step further by becoming the first company to commit to zero *cumulative* carbon emissions.
How catalytic this commitment ends up being towards economy-wide progress on negative emissions will depend on the details of Microsoft’s actions.
Offsetting the ~15M tons CO2 Microsoft currently emits is a drop in the ~50Bt CO2e bucket of global emissions. But if Microsoft spurs other orgs/govts to join them & in the process drives increases in deployments and decreases in costs, it can have significant global implications
Encouragingly, Microsoft has pledged to spend $1B to advance carbon removal strategies in a “carbon innovation fund,” which could be highly catalytic if used to enable a few key advances:
Funding breakthrough R&D to bring new carbon removal concepts to market (see @TheNASEM http://nas-sites.org/dels/studies/cdr/ …)
Purchasing negative emissions services at market prices above current voluntary offsets, creating a robust demand signal for early technology deployment that can drive down technology costs (see @rhodium_group Direct Air Capture report https://rhg.com/research/capturing-leadership-policies-for-the-us-to-advance-direct-air-capture-technology/ …)
Supporting policymakers and independent groups to set standards and protocols for measuring and verifying negative emissions projects and commitments.
This level of climate ambition should be the standard for every tech company. If the largest tech companies spend even a small fraction of their cash on hand on carbon removal, it would open a host of new investment opportunities for these companies in the future.
