We're devasted to have discovered that just before #HolyWeek vandals entered into St Helen's, Little Cawthorpe, Lincolnshire & targeted the beautiful stained glass windows. The faces of saints & of Jesus have been used for what can only be described as target practice #Thread 1/8pic.twitter.com/vD9kUquYil

Carefully aimed projectiles have smashed specific areas of the glass, mainly several heads & faces. Examination of the centres of impact which are circular & measure about 3mm-5mm in diameter would suggest an airgun pellet or small stone fired by a catapult. #Thread 2/8pic.twitter.com/ke6WiOM6QY

Some of the damage is at a height too great to have been attacked from ground level except with some kind of long implement using exceptional force. Built in 1859 to replace a medieval church, this is the third place of worship on this site, the earliest dating to the 1100s. 3/8pic.twitter.com/ApgjawujCF

Its precious stained glass, painstakingly created by artists and craftsmen was made by Lavers, Barraud & Westlake, was installed 1860-1890. The south windows depict Christ and the Doctors and the Presentation in the Temple. The impressive west window, donated by... 4/8pic.twitter.com/0kliNTfbkz

Lysimachus Parker who died in 1860, shows Noah's Ark, the Baptism of Christ & the Crossing of the Red Sea. This #HeritageCrime attack is particularly upsetting to local people from the tiniest parish in Lindsey who cherish this church and who saved it from certain demolition 5/8pic.twitter.com/nOeUiiTsMJ

in 1996 after it was declared structurally unsound. We at The Churches Conservation Trust became involved in that year & we now own this historically significant building, keeping it open for everyone to visit & use. 6/8pic.twitter.com/pKfOd7jmYV

Our conservation team are inspecting the damage & specialist stained glass experts will be sought to evaluate the best way to repair the damage. Sadly this will likely cost thousands of pounds. Please consider helping us to repair the damage caused to this beautiful church 7/8pic.twitter.com/nUOjit32Ly

Your appeal tweet has been liked, shared and I have donated. This is sickening and what is frustrating is that the act is so thoughtless but also hurtful to the community. Hopefully you can put toughened glass sheets up on the outside to prevent reoccurrence? 💖

Report indicates that the damage was done from inside - toughened sheets would be needed on both sides!
