The parish we just went to on Sunday was informed that would not be happening. I wasn't too sure what that meant but looked it up. Is it a common thing?

Only in extreme cases, like in a crashing airplane or soldiers before a battle. Supposed to be risk of death type of thing where the faithful cannot get individual confession in time before dying, or there’s no physical way priests can see them all

There’s supposed to be 2 things General absolution is also called Rite III in reconciliation and is as I described Communal penance may be just preparing yourself for the Christmas season for example, but doesn’t count as absolution so you still need individual 2 can include 1
