Pretty wild that my diocese's Bishop has issued an order for priests to conduct one communal penance service at each parish due to a dire lack of priests and the ongoing pandemic shutting down access

The parish we just went to on Sunday was informed that would not be happening. I wasn't too sure what that meant but looked it up. Is it a common thing?

Only in extreme cases, like in a crashing airplane or soldiers before a battle. Supposed to be risk of death type of thing where the faithful cannot get individual confession in time before dying, or there’s no physical way priests can see them all

Oh whoa, ok. Maybe I'm mixing it up with something else then? It sounds like this is a very normal and to be expected thing at the parish we went to..

There’s supposed to be 2 things General absolution is also called Rite III in reconciliation and is as I described Communal penance may be just preparing yourself for the Christmas season for example, but doesn’t count as absolution so you still need individual 2 can include 1

In this case we’re doing communal penance that includes general absolution which is only supposed to happen in times of intense danger
