It didn't sit right with me to tell my kids Santa's a holy figure who watches their actions and weighs their deeds, and will reward them for their kindnesses And then say "LOL just kidding he's not real, I'm a liar, but this other guy Jesus is totally real, trust me this time"
I do indeed, my friend.
My point is, as someone who takes their religion extremely seriously, our views are gonna differ hard in where the line is. And the last thing I want to do is water down that faith like a lot of parents do and pass on a confused version to my kids.

I wonder a bit if neither of you was particularly upset and neither parricularly religious because specifically because the religion that was supposed to be there was so watered down that they taught you Santa was real.
-
For the not being so upset, maybe. But again I know people who had a very religious upbringing and they had Santa... Though actually the thing is here on Christmas eve "baby Jesus" brings the presents. And they were rather told it was "an angel" for similar reason.

Knowing how the Christmas tradition differs _wildly_ in the USA compared to my country. I can understand the concern.

That’s a serious concern for me. We Catholics have st Nicholas day on December 6th already. He’s been remade for commercial purposes and moved to Christmas Day where he obscures our Lord. He’s largely replaced Christ as the main figure in the greater culture. That concerns me.
