What about the Pilgrim Progress... it is old, but it takes the Christian imaginary as literal and the stories have a moral at the end.

I was forced to read a (bestselling!) Christian novel for book club a while back. I made it one chapter. The main character got knocked unconscious *in the passive voice,* and angry soldiers shouted angrily. I couldn’t do it.
