People rarely use free products. They snatch them up and forget, then go out and buy another product which they immediately use because there’s a level of personal investment. “I paid for this, I’m gonna get something out of it.” This is why self-help courses aren’t free.

I have a free self-help course on my email list. I post it and get 20 signups & 2 downloads. There are a sliver of people who use free products. This is why authors give away the first book in a series, they hope for a 10% customer base who reads the book and buys the series.

If you’re considering giving something away for free, ask what the next product is and how many will use it. Hoping to gather emails? A free product gets you a lot of signups and no follow-through. What do you market to those folks? Book series? Line up a LOT of volumes.
