The first one is great art but is too sensual for the Virgin Mary imo
I’m not aware of this particular art piece, and I don’t quite follow on the ironic part; I agree that that Church isn’t prudish about sex and that art can reflect that. I disagree tho on this, I don’t think the Virgin Mary should portrayed in a seductive/sensual manner
In all honesty, my guess is it wasn’t intended to be sexual, it’s a Japanese-style representation of Italian Renaissance art of a Jewish mother. Perceived sensuousness was likely an attempt at expressing physical beauty in a medium not (typically) skilled at that.
I can’t think of a genuine Christian alive who would want to portray the Blessed Virgin as sexual, but I could see it happening accidentally based on the layers of cultural and phenological issues to sort through plus the artist’s attempt to portray beauty in their own way.
So in this case I say, I am glad the artist had the deep love for the subjects to work so diligently at rendering them as beautifully as they could and I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt on an unintentional faux pas.
I agree that I can’t judge the intention of the artist, but in terms of the objective nature of the piece, I would not consider it appropriate, out of respect to Mary. Women and sexuality is the 3rd rail of Catholic twitter, but I’ve seen this piece before and had to say it
Fair point, and good to maintain that proper expectation.
