Zac nails something very true here. Men will drink thirty beers and beat their wife or molest their kids and alcohol is legal, but marijuana is not. That said, marijuana does have a serious problem: Instant relief from emotional pain. This can cause addiction issues. Here’s why:https://twitter.com/ZacSmall_/status/1285555333314863105 …

But if a person uses ONLY marijuana (or alcohol, or even prescription drugs) to manage their symptoms, they never develop new coping skills to SOLVE their life problems and GET BETTER. They may even stop using old coping skills and GET WORSE. Then they NEED marijuana to cope.

Again, this isn’t particular to marijuana. Anything can become addictive like this: Prescription meds, alcohol, heroin, porn, video games. Marijuana is a threat, though, because the side effects are so minimal it seems harmless to become mentally addicted. It’s so easy.

Science has shown genuine uses for marijuana in managing a range of issues. But it does require careful management by each individual to make sure they don’t sink into it as it becomes their SOLE coping method. Collapsing into reliance on it for ALL emotional pain is a danger.

This makes marijuana like prescription drugs in many regards. People become reliant on popping a trazidone when they feel upset. But marijuana doesn’t have to knock you flat like many as-needed meds. You can dose and keep going. Easier to get mentally addicted as sole cope.

This isn’t a statement of what I believe policy should be. Every person needs to manage their addiction cycles and coping skills. But in my years of work, marijuana seems far too easy to get addicted and stop growing, never solve the problems. That’s the real danger I’ve seen.
