Counter counter argument. Failure to see that an abundance of personal sovereignty IS the greater good vs limiting freedoms to obtain it is why the west is crumbling.

I approve this counter counter. The greater good is only when we choose it. If we are forced to do anything good then it's not really good.

Agree Adam. Having an absolute interest in a moving-target like “freedom” means your ideas can be used against you (“you” being whichever group is on the wrong side of the mainstream current). I feel the same way about “principles.” Too many are boxed in by these concepts.

You're both right. Like all things, it has to be balanced between the two. The individual needs to be cultivated in wisdom and understanding, then the society of individuals can all move towards the greater good.
