On my 18th birthday I woke up to my girlfriend calling to admit she’d cheated. My mom got furious at me for not liking a gift I told her in advance I wouldn’t like. Rich grandfather who disowned us lectured me for an hour to never trust anyone. Good prep for adulthood.

I've already informed my son of his gift. We joke about it. He knows as long as he's working and in school he has a home here. I've made that clear to him. He's still getting the boxes though

My parents said much the same. That I could stay so long as I paid rent. I moved out before too long.

My dad threw me out the day after I turned 18, and we didn't speak until less than two years before his death. I'm just glad that I was able to. I hope that guy is able to come to terms with his father at some point.

What is with Boomer dads abandoning their children? How did this become such a thing?

They're desire to be free was stronger than their desire to parent.
