People act like asking me questions about my Catholic faith and the teachings of the Church is an imposition or a burden on me. Nah. It’s the best part of my day. Ask away. I’m not the most educated schmuck but I’ll give it my most honest answer as I’ve learned it.

What are your personal guidelines about writing about sexuality and other things that could be considered “gratuitous” or “titillation.” Anime-culture has this in plenty. Do you make the attempt to write to that culture and if so, what are your ethical guidelines?

I work hard never to glorify any sexual expression apart from what the Church teaches, which is, physical intimacy of a sexual nature is to take place only between man and wife and must involve the possibility of reproduction. Now mentioning of sexual aspects, yes, I do that.

But even then I bear in mind that I would rather break my own fingers than write a passage which tempts a struggling person toward sin.

But to be fair, the threshold of temptation is different per person. Like one drink of alcohol to one person versus a recovering alcoholic. This is a very subjective line. So how do you measure this in terms of sexual titillation?

Yes indeed. I find then that the line is found where the writing bothers my conscience when I consider my own children reading it someday.
