Some people attend church because they are Christian. Others are Christian because they attend church. These two groups do not serve the same god. And now, in the absence of church services, this is growing more starkly apparent.

In full disclosure, you’ll perhaps find me a far more critical type than others, going from unsatisfying megachurches to Catholicism in a tiny parish.

I think the qualifier is if the person is presumptuous of their salvation. One can be deeply mired in habitual sin, but could be pleading for mercy in Confession and Communion. To an outside observer, little may have changed, but interiorly, they know they are a deep sinner.

The real problem person is the one who keeps spitting on the poor but assumes they are saved and worthy. But most Sundays, you always hear how much Jesus hates the hypocrites and the presumptuously holy.
