In my years as a psychotherapist I’ve treated a wide range of addictions, from chemical to emotional to digital, and I’ve seen firsthand that a person must both want to quit and believe a better life is possible. Absent either of these, total relapse is virtually guaranteed.

Just wondering but does a good, supportive community also help to prevent relapse?

The smaller relapses, yes, community can absolutely help. But no support community on earth can stop a person from using if they don’t want to stop.

Thank you for taking time and consideration to respond. I'm glad to know that community plays such a role in helping us better ourselves regardless of what struggles we have.

Like with any sin, recovery works best when undertaken amidst a loving family.

So would the same be true that a relapse would be more likely to occur in a community that either enables, refusal or mock any attempt to better a person?

The research does seem to indicate that. AA would say it almost guarantees it.

So success to recover is a combination of wanting to recover and belief in betterment and those qualities can be either amplified or diminished by a person's social network (who they know, community)?
