One of the weirdest and most telling parts of the American healthcare system is that my 5-day old infant already has $3,000+ of medical debt in her own name for being born and receiving care.

I’m no socialist. But there’s got to be a third solution besides “Give the State absolute power over health, life, and death” and “Charge infants $3k”.

This is what middle class deals with. Upper class doesn’t have to worry about it. The poor get subsidized birth so it’s free, which means they need more overnment assistance to care for the growing family, which means they’ll likely only vote for one party. As will the kids.

That’s one thing I’ve never understood about America. Amazing country, but healthcare system needs a bit of work. I’m British. All our basic healthcare (births and emergency surgery etc) is free. Definitely prefer it
-
Major downside to our system is most surgeries that aren’t urgent are scheduled months in advance. So I go private (still costs less than America) to have it fixed really quick

It is standard, and to offset costs for high-risk births. Another reason we did our last at home. Still had to pay for someone to do paperwork.

What exactly did you think I meant when I said punish birth, apart from the government running our currency and economy setting the overal costs so prohibitively high?

Our midwife charged $5k for each of our births. No hospital, no Caesarean, no passive-agressive neonatal ward nurses. Recommended if your pregnancy is low risk.
