I'm surprised that backpacks are so popular among motorcyclists, given their inherent risk of spinal injury and that a shoulder bag, with some care and planning, can be repurposed as a saddle bag.

My riding instructor specifically warned the class about the safety issues with backpacks and warned against their use whenever possible. Better to spend money on a bag kit or pannier than to have whatever is in your pack, thrust into your spine.
