Most folks do. It’s not at Amazon level yet, but the customer base is pretty engaged.

If I had the choice to buy some guy’s product out of Target or out of the trunk of his car...

For a book, yes. Especially fiction. For an ebook guide I still recommend Gumroad.

Amazon algorithm rewarding only new books and only bestselling new books has led to a huge price depression, everything runs $3.99 or less now. Even $4.99 books face decreased returns. And you’re at 70% so a $3.99 sale gets you about $2.79. Then you get buried in competition.

Gumroad takes around 10% if I recall, and competition is pretty light.

Good luck getting browsed on Amazon unless you’re in one of the tiny genres (that will shortly be colonized by people from bloated genres because Amazon doesn’t police their categories).

If you get past the competition with a huge slam of rapid sales you generate without Amazon’s help in a category that isn’t bloated.
