When I’m anxious about a situation, I think of the worst moments in my life. I’ve been treated for multiple-event PTSD so I’ve got a few to pick from. I saturate myself in that moment and remember the horror and agony. Then I ask how this new situation compares. Anxiety gone.

The trick is to gain enough distance from your past through healing and/or treatment that it no longer overwhelms you. But that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever. Post-traumatic stress is intensely real, but so can be Post-traumatic growth. Harnessing your experiences for strength.
