Hockey as a metaphor for honor cultures is handled by @tamler in his book, Why Honor Matters. Rule changes in the 90’s ruined the sport. Feel free to extrapolate...https://twitter.com/MUGGER1955/status/1230959074482806784 …

Replying to @roman_mcclay @tamler
I know nothing about hockey and only ever saw one game: In California, where they flew in Canadians to play against the Canadians already on the local Californian team. They periodically beat the crap out of each other for American enjoyment. Seems like more bread and circuses.

Played hockey as kid in MN. Cold. Hard. We practiced tossing off gloves cuz that’s how the pros fought. Fastest glove-off had an advantage. I never duked in the game tho.

Perhaps what the pros have forsaken the youth still treasure.

Brawling is horrible but seems necessary somehow. I remember a horrific fight 40 years ago. 2 dudes grabbed each other’s collars and traded punches to the face until both hit the ice bleeding and dazed. Refs? What refs? As kids we assumed this was normal
