There are two purposes - neither of which is aesthetic. The 1st is to distinguish those who “get it” from those who don’t. It’s a class and status separator. Modern Art today serves the same purpose as when some politicians "write" books or give talks. It's a way to pay them for something indirectly, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the art, book or talk.
