My gut reaction was to scoff. But actually, this is an excellent point. The language has shifted so that we describe mothers who care for their children as if they’re just staying at home. I think “homemaker” could now convey some higher economic status: it says “my husband earns enough that I can spend my time raising our children and managing domestic affairs in our home, which we own”

But honestly I don’t see smart women choosing maternity over career until there’s a big cultural shift in attitudes toward childcare. Right now smart women let illiterate Central American peasant women nanny their kids. Obviously they don’t think childcare is valuable work.
