PB&J on white bread is the kid equivalent of dog food. So is Mac&Cheez. Red Delicious apples are mealy and inedible. Beefsteak tomatoes taste like cardboard. If you were born after 1965, you have never tasted a real banana. People used to eat more than than 3 different animals.

I started becoming aware of this stuff after I changed my diet to control lifelong digestive issues. I still don't have a real kitchen or a garden plot, but I manage to avoid the stuff that makes me sick. I'm horrified to think of what I ate as a kid.

Most people have never tasted real bread, including people who bake it from scratch. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I gather that the methods used pre-1920, which take longer and produce a more complex flavor, have almost completely fallen out of use.

I figured out by trial and error that vegetable oil was making me sick, and eliminated it from my diet.
