The other one I don't get is people who don't want others to know they're inexperienced. People treat one better if they know one is inexperienced! "I haven't done this before" is a ticket to understanding and sympathy.

Lots of insecurity floating around our world right now. Attachment issues are on the rise. They don’t have to be full disorders to cause some minor issues.

Is insecurity primarily about social relationships rather than general suspicion one will fail? Like is it a feeling that a person is one mistake away from being rejected and cast out into the darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth?

So a person could be highly competent *and* insecure?

I grew up approximately the least popular kid in school; I was widely disliked for being a nerd with a large vocabulary ("the walking, talking dictionary"). I learned early on that social rejection is neither universal, nor that bad when it happens.

Fear of social rejection is, therefore, something of a blind spot for me because I just don't experience it.

It's proven quite useful. The real trick is how to teach this in words to my children, who seem to be having different experiences than I did despite my eldest (10yo) having a similarly large vocabulary.

My book may actually help articulate that language... shameless plug.

You had me at explaining anxiety. It's a blind shot for me, which means I really want to know what it is I don't see, to understand my fellow creatures better.

This should definitely do that. I’m a behaviorist, so everything weaves together for me. Insecurity and anxiety and panic attacks and PTSD and depression
