I looked up and froze. Everything around me, the seaweed and sunbeams and little fish, swayed back and forth with the current. But this long black fish stayed eerily still. It’s muscular body resisted the pull of the waves as it pointed straight at me like an oncoming spear.

You don’t know primal fear until you confront a predator in its natural environment where you are weak. Could a barracuda swallow me whole? No. But I was in just a swimsuit with an exposed belly and no knife. A ways from shore. Nick one artery and I’m done for.

I ask myself, why isn’t it attacking? It isn’t sure it wants me. It could get the raw end of the deal when we tangle. I need to look MEAN. I spread my arms and legs wide to expand my size and didn’t turn my back. I slowly paddled backward like a sea turtle. Full eye contact.

That black fish hovered there, preternaturally still against the waves, until I backed all the way into a narrow cove and reached shore. We kept full eye contact the entire time. One wrong move and I could have bled out in the ocean. But I knew the rules and played the game.

This is what you need to learn about the urban jungle. What do predators want? How do you stay safe? What do you do when things get tense?

It’s everywhere, bro. Having a sixth sense about your surroundings. People don’t think it’s possible, so they never take the time to learn.
