The most surreal part of this push for obsessive sensitivity in language is being scolded for even tiny accidental infractions by people who used to laugh uproariously as they hurled racial slurs, told rape jokes, and joked about killing gay people. Lingering guilt is ugly.

You nailed it when you said "power" because that's what it's about, more specifically "dominance". The ability to make you police what you say for fear of dog piling, or doxing, even calling your employer to get you fired. 1/2

Most of these types of people are miserable with themselves, and misery loves company. What better way to bring people down to your level then finding an idealogical tool you can use as a cudgel. 2/2

Tearing apart an 80 year old man for using a dated term is wickedly disproportional, and takes neither intent nor context into account. It cares neither for the man nor anyone else. It helps no one. It is mere moral masturbation for the nasty critic.
