Men explain simple concepts to people they respect while comparing knowledge in an effort to learn from each other. Women only explain simple concepts to children, and to women they deem less intelligent than themselves. Thus the origin of women bristling at “mansplaining.”

I hadn't realized that was a sex related trait. Thank you for explaining that.

Except, of course, it's not.

That's probably true for most men. But trust me, sometimes it really is "Here, little lady, let me show you how it's done." Usually from men who assume women can't do home repair. To their credit, though, most change that voice inflection once they realize I know what I'm doing.

I'm sure they're trying to be nice, but tone of voice carries a lot, and the guys that do that aren't telling me out of respect. Again, though, that's not the norm, and once they realize I don't need teaching, they're helpful and respectful.
