Men explain simple concepts to people they respect while comparing knowledge in an effort to learn from each other. Women only explain simple concepts to children, and to women they deem less intelligent than themselves. Thus the origin of women bristling at “mansplaining.”

The expectation is the other person will say “I’ve heard this part” and find a common ground for shared knowledge. When men explain, it’s a signal they respect the other person. But women would only talk that way to a child. So they believe they’re being condescended to.
