5 months ago right now I was coming out of emergency surgery to stabilize my leg and stop the internal bleeding. None of my family or friends had arrived yet, but I knew my children were safe and the cavalry was coming. It was the first morning with my sweet wife gone.

Thank you Tex. It’s funny every time I talk to my best friend I say, apologetically, “I’ve been really down lately,” like that’s new information or anything has changed. The downs are just as bad but I do have some happiness beginning to creep in.

Definitely. Grieving feels foolish. Either we're like soap bubbles popping in & out of existence & this is all there is, in which case it makes little sense to waste precious life grieving another bubble, or there's an afterlife, in which case why be sad? Yet grieve we do.

Because either way we must endure the rest of this trek without them while encountering a billion things we wish we could share with them. That grief gives way to reacting as they would have, so their impact in the world is still felt.

I go back to the shortest verse in the Bible: "Jesus wept." He wept over his friend Lazarus's death. Even though he knew he was about to resurrect Lazarus. Even though he specifically *allowed* Lazarus to die so he *could* resurrect him. Death is profoundly wrong.

The Christian God, who has redeemed death by entering it himself and coming out the other side, still regards death as a tragedy. And those two words, "Jesus wept," mean anyone who offers as comfort "God must have a plan," or, "we'll reunite in heaven" are out of step with God.
