The other thing is that, according to The Last Psychiatrist, the role of antidepressants is greatly misunderstood. They are, in theory, meant to be short-term, to help somebody get through a brief adjustment period as they restructure their lives to not be depressed.

To give a concrete example, depressed people have enormous trouble getting out of the house to go to the gym; an anti-depressant could, in theory, help them do that for a few weeks so they have the habit + the initial benefits of exercise, then can do it on their own.

I refuse to work with psychiatrists who don’t take this view with most patients. The ones that do, I treasure like gold.
