He used an unlicensed photo of a famous model without my knowledge. At the last moment I found out and forced him to change it to a picture of my wife so I knew we’d be safe. While I know she’s smoking hot, this cover is all wrong for the genre. As such, it sells poorly.

This is one of my goals too. I've got my eye on some artists that I would love to commission covers from but I don't want to start my writing project in debt. In the mean time, I'm trying to learn 3d modeling and build tools to make better covers myself.

It really is a fantastic book. I was hoping we'd get more adventures from that universe.
-
If I can get a better cover I can promote it more effectively, which would justify the cost of a sequel.

Correct on both counts. Great book, but the cover speaks in the visual idiom of romance-based fantasy.

How much does a cover generally run? It’s one of those budgeting questions that seems so opaque from this side of the author-publisher/reader divide.
-
Huge spectrum. Mine run about $500. Some folks pay $1,500.

You know what they say: Don't judge a book by the part of the book that has a the sole purpose of facilitating judgement.
