I've seen his book in my TL on occasion. The over-produced and ambiguity on what it's actually about set off some alarms for me.

To be flat honest, this is because it’s extremely challenging to nail down a concise twitter statement about its contents while doing the book justice.

To attempt: It’s a book about the dual nature of man as beast and intellect, and the way those two halves interact and cannot be denied. This is set against the backdrop of the near-future where politics are even more polarized and the beast is forcibly denied by policymakers.

This story is told initially from the perspective of an AI observing the remains of the human race, then shifts between multiple POV characters of varying derangement and debauchery. As the story unfolds we see the tapestry of Man torn asunder by the claws of the ravening beast.

The things which set this book apart is not only the care taken in detailing each evolutionary pathway for the behaviors in visceral detail, but the dynamic humanity of the characters and the incredible detail of their agonizing choices and situations.

You will root for the killers and weep for the gentle. And in the end, you’ll understand yourself better and your own internal beast.
