When I practiced therapy in the jail, every inmate wanted to shake my hand. I was advised by staff never to accept but I always did, so for a moment they would feel like respected men instead of rejected animals in a cage. Kindness can be the smallest thing and mean so much.

Few offered a hand in view of others (for fear of being labeled 'working with the cops') but in the privacy of my office many wanted the dignity of a handshake. Like you, I pissed on conventional wisdom and obliged. You could tell it meant something to them.
