I think that a lot of people feel that way. That their value is so small to those around them that even he smallest nicety from someone else carries so much more weight than you would expect.

Few offered a hand in view of others (for fear of being labeled 'working with the cops') but in the privacy of my office many wanted the dignity of a handshake. Like you, I pissed on conventional wisdom and obliged. You could tell it meant something to them.
